Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward etched his name in the history books Monday night. Ward became the first netminder in franchise history to be score a goal as he was credited with Carolina’s empty-net tally in the club’s 4-2 victory against the New Jersey Devils at the RBC Center. Ward was awarded the goal after Ilya Kovalchuk’s errant pass for Adam Henrique from the end line wound up going the length of the ice and into an empty net with 29.4 seconds left. He became the first NHL goalie to be credited with a goal since Chris Mason accomplished the feat for Nashville in a game against Phoenix on April 15, 2006. Ward, 27, finished with 23 saves for Carolina, which has earned points in six of eight games. “It would have been a lot cooler if I had shot the puck or did something like that,” Ward said.
